Katya Ironworks is excited to present the Hovercraft Mk-II; the ergonomic cordless palm router baseplate.
We precision crafted Hovercraft Mk-II from the best selection of premium billet metals American smelting can offer. When you first see it, the functional minimalism of engine turned aerospace aluminum meets warmth of navy brass immediately invites you to pick it up. When you first pick it up, the perfectly balanced weight, the thoughtful functionality, and the dynamic beauty, invites you to go craft something beautiful with it. Combining vintage aircraft architectural forms with sensual design lines, Hovercraft Mk-II breaks through the expected: clean lines, soft teardrop curves, engine-turned two-tone metal finishes, and diamond engraved precision scales. Adds the touch of elegance to your compact palm router. Hovercraft Mk-II takes in a tool and gives you back an instrument.
COMPATIBILITY
Bolt-on install compatible with the following:
- DEWALT 20V Max XR Cordless Router (DCW600/DCW600B)
- Milwaukee M18 Fuel Compact Router (2723-20)
- Makita Brushless Cordless Compact Router (XTR01Z 18V LXT)
- Corded equivalents of above may also work, but we recommend you use cordless.
You do not need to make any modifications to your router. Hovercraft Mk-II can be removed without any changes to your router, leaving it in factory stock configuration. That being said, after a few uses, we are confident you will not want to remove it.
QUALITY
- Aerospace grade hard tempered billet aluminum, engraver's brass, stainless steel socket hardware. Professional, elegant aesthetics with a near mirror finish precision engine-turned flat surfaces. Precision mill tapped (or lathe turned) threads, precision lathe turned spindles. The Hovercraft Mk-II is crafted to be an heirloom tool, one to enjoy year after year, and give to their grandkids.
- Our generous 6+ mm thick solid billet aluminum is designed to absorb vibrations from your router, resulting in smoother cuts. Hovercraft Mk-II is rigid; does not cause your router to chatter (bounce from the cut) and doesn't leave a poor finish; it does not resonate and break while you are cutting; it is non-porous and does not absorb humidity, does not swell, does not change cut dimensions; it does not absorb oils and stains from one workpiece and then transfer them to another workpiece.
- Precision CNC milled out of hard tempered billet aluminum, it securely holds onto your router. Designed to hold calibration and survive daily life in the wood shop. You can carry the router from holding it with our attachment, even with the large 6Ah battery.
EASE
- Bolt on installation. No modifications to your router.
- Hovercraft Mk-II fits between studs and joists. Perfect to make openings for air ducts, sewage pipes, cutting custom holes in drywall, ceiling openings for light boxes, etc.
- Hovercraft is compact enough it does not get in the way on a crowded workbench. When cutting circles, it will not knock other things off of your bench.
FEATURES
- Lathe turned precision spiraled solid metal handle, with lathe turned brass weights. The brass tip acts as a crossguard while balancing the weight of the router. The screw machine cut handle spirals provide firm control and a comfortable grip that allows your palm to breathe. The handle is removable and ambidextrous. Like all other parts of this kit, the handle is made of one-piece solid metal. It is heavy because it is not a tube. It is mirror shiny because it was machined that way.
- Precision CNC cut scales that will not rub off. With 1/32" increments, the scales allow you to precisely set circle diameters, edges, rabbets, dado, and mortises. Scales are engraved symmetrically to allow perfectly perpandicular settings, as well as angled settings.
- The Hovercraft Mk-II is manufactured via one-piece concentric machining. The machining center we use in the manufacturing is the same point as that of your router's spinning center. With Hovercraft Mk-II your router is bolted down perfectly concentric, and the bolt holes are machined (not drilled) to position the router exactly that way. Each curved edge of Hovercraft is then exactly on a 2.25" radius from the center. Each straight edge is a 2.25" translation from the center. Simply by looking from above, without seeing the center, you get to know exactly where you are cutting. For example, if you put a clamp on the workplace, when you touch the clamp with Hovercraft, your cutter center stops 2.25" from the clamp. Simply subtract the tool cutter radius from 2.25 to find the edge of your cut. This makes it a breeze to calculate mortises and other interrupted cuts.
- Cuts glass smooth circles, arcs, blind holes with clean milled floors, and thru-holes with clean edges. One simple and easy operation. Infinitely adjustable diameters up to 15.25". For circle center reference, Hovercraft Mk-II comes equipped with a custom machined 18-8 stainless steel circle cutting assembly. When not in use, the assembly conveniently stores on top of the Hovercraft Mk-II. Simply slide the hinge pin into its channel and lock it at the radius you need on the CNC engraved ruler. Drill a 3/8" hole on the circle center to a depth of 3/8". Push the precision machined stainless steel guide in the hole, and make the circular cut. This small hole is later easily filled with a dowel. The performance, precision, and accuracy of our system is unmatched. Time to retire that flimsy plastic circle cutting jig.
ERGONOMICS
- The Hovercraft Mk-II grabs your router from where the cut is actually happening. The weight of the router is carried by the tool (not your elbows). You no longer need to push the router into the cut, you only focus on gently guiding it. The weight of the router is shifted over the workpiece, not hanging off the cliff, and there is no rattle. The offset handle allows you to instead "pull" the router into the cut with one hand, at the cut plane, and steer the router with your other hand. You can make cuts that come out so clean you may not even need to sand them.
- With the spiral handle pulling the router into the cut, you can make climb cuts just as easily as conventional cuts. While turning tight corners with the router, thanks to the handle's positive control and inward pull, the router hugs the corner perfectly every time. Hovercraft is built like racecar, super low CG and stiff suspension, Hovercraft leans into the turn, keeping your cut precise.
- Arthritis friendly design. With 7 inches of leverage at the weighted brass tip handle, and 4 inches of grip, and super low CG, your wrists and fingers no longer have to grip the router for dear life, nor do you have to fight the router, nor bear its weight. Hovercraft works with the pull-and-guide principle: you pull the Hovercraft into the cut with one hand, while gently pushing the router to guide the cut with the other hand. Without the Hovercraft, you would be pushing the router into the cut, while also pushing the router to guide it. Applying two coincident forces in the same direction to keep something in place is exhausting, imprecise, and makes the router want to tip over, skip, climb, kick back, gouge, burn, or tear out.
- Feather light. Keeps your rig mobile. It can stay on your router permanently. You can hang it to your belt. Cut a 6-inch ducting hole in an attic without breaking a sweat.
Trim Router Baseplate / Jig
- Never use flat trim bits to cut circles. You must use a upcut spiral endmill. You can also use an up-down cut spiral endmill (for plywood), Be wary of down-cut bits for they can kick the router back upwards.
- We custom machine every one of these units to your order. Please be patient.
- No router included! Router in the photos is for illustration purposes only. You will only receive the attachment and necessary hardware.
- Due to continued improvements the version you receive may look slightly different than the photos. It will still work the same (and be better).
